Actuary Information at Cal Poly

Important: The Actuarial Exam Signup Deadline is July 22, 2005! Don't forget to bring an official calculator.

  • An actuary uses a mixture of mathematics, statistics, economics, computer skills, finance, and regulatory knowledge to gauge the economic impact of future events and risks.

  • Job satisfaction surveys consistently rank being an actuary as one of the top 5 professions in America. Actuarial compensation levels are comparatively generous.

(taken from www.beanactuary.org)

  • A Fellow in the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or the Casualty Society of Actuaries (CSA) has earned legal recognition and responsibilities as an actuary based on passing roughly 10 actuarial exams.
  • Sitting for (taking) at least the first  actuarial exam demonstrates a commitment on your part to the profession. It is not uncommon to receive letters of introduction from companies and recruitment firms after passing your first exam. Many college graduates are hired after passing the first one or two exams.
  • The first two exams are offered biannually in Santa Barbara. The remaining exams are offered on a more limited basis in locations such as Los Angeles or San Francisco.
  • Currently, the Actuary Education System is being redesigned. For current education information see Education Redesign at the SOA website.

  • Get used to the notation before hand by reading an old sample exam and/or looking at books on the suggest reading list. I have some of these books. Feel free to ask.

  • Only official SOA/CSA calculators are allowed. Be sure to arrange (purchase/borrow) to have one for your exam.
